On 27 October 2017, I gave my inaugural lecture at Universiteit Leiden (The Netherlands). The lecture was titled "Beyond programming: The quest for machine intelligence", and it dealt with the past, future and nature of computation, with a focus on machine learning, automated design of algorithms and artificial intelligence.
Inaugural lectures are an important tradition at Universiteit Leiden, the oldest university in the Netherlands. Albert Einstein, who held a guest professorship there, gave his inaugural lecture precisely 97 years before I did (no pressure!), and the format was largely the same - very formal, festive and dignified. For me, my family, friends and colleagues from near and far, it was an unforgettable event.
